Indian stock markets halted its five-day winning streak as the Nifty index dipped below the 22,400 mark during a volatile trading session on April 26.
By the market close, the Sensex plummeted by 609.28 points or 0.82% to 73,730.16, while the Nifty fell by 150.30 points or 0.67% to 22,420. Among the stocks, 1710 saw gains, 1521 experienced losses, and 106 remained unchanged.
Notable decliners on the Nifty included Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Nestle India, IndusInd Bank, and M&M, whereas Tech Mahindra, Divis Labs, LTIMindtree, Bajaj Auto, and BPCL emerged as the top gainers.
In terms of sectors, all indices except for auto, bank, and capital goods closed in positive territory, with oil & gas, healthcare, realty, and media sectors gaining between 0.3 to 1%.
The BSE midcap index surged by 0.8%, while the smallcap index witnessed a modest uptick of 0.3%.
