India's power consumption up by 10% in April-Feb period

20 Mar 2023 , 03:50 PM

India's power usage has grown by 10% to reach 1,375.57 billion units (BU) between April and February of this financial year, surpassing the total electricity supplied in the entire 2021-22 fiscal year.

According to official data, power consumption during the same period last year was 1245.54 BU.

The amount of electricity used during the period of April 2022 to February 2023 in India has exceeded the entire power consumption of the fiscal year 2021-22, totaling 1375.57 billion units (BU). In comparison, the total power consumption for the fiscal year 2021-22 was 1374.02 BU, which is lower than the current 11-month consumption.

According to experts, there is a projection of double-digit growth in power consumption in the upcoming months due to the anticipation of exceptionally high demand, particularly during the summer season.

As per the power ministry's estimation, the peak demand for electricity in India during April of this year is projected to be 229 GW, surpassing the peak demand of 215.88 GW observed during the same month in the previous year.

Furthermore, they expressed their opinion that soaring temperatures during the summer season would lead to an increase in power usage for operating air conditioning units and other cooling devices.
