Ahead of the Nov. 7 deadline set by Adani Power, which has reduced electricity shipments to Bangladesh by more than half, Bangladesh is expediting payment of more than $800 million that it owes the Indian corporation, according to news reports.
According to reports, Adani Power, which supplies electricity to Dhaka from its 1,600 megawatt (MW) Godda plant in the state of Jharkhand in eastern India, set the deadline for payment because it is having trouble importing the coal needed to generate electricity.
According to a senior official at the Bangladesh Power Development Board who talked to Reuters, the company cut the power supply to Bangladesh this month from about 1,400 MW to 700–800 MW.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Bangladesh has been having trouble paying its bills because of the high cost of importing products and petroleum. Its problems have also been exacerbated by the political unrest that resulted in the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August.
