The Ministry of Power has announced a ₹9.15 lakh crore plan to improve India’s power infrastructure and energy security.
The National Electricity Plan 2023 to 2032, announced by Union Minister Manohar Lal at a press conference in New Delhi, lays out an ambitious framework for expanding India’s transmission network and capacity to meet a predicted peak demand of 458 GW by 2032.
According to the plan, the country’s transmission network will expand from 4.85 lakh circuit kilometres (ckm) in 2024 to 6.48 lakh ckm by 2032, with transformation capacity expected to increase from 1,251 GVA to 2,342 GVA.
The Union Minister explained that these changes are critical for meeting rising electricity demand and facilitating the integration of variable renewable energy (VRE) sources into the national grid.
The minister also announced the approval of 50 GW of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) capacity to evacuate 280 GW of VRE by 2030.
“So far, 42 GW of this capacity has been finished, with 85 GW under development and 75 GW currently in the bidding process. The remaining 82GW will be approved in due course,” he added.
