Indian markets end the day in Green

18 May 2024 , 12:12 AM

Indian markets managed to sustain their upward trajectory on Friday, despite a cautious sentiment in global markets triggered by hints from US Federal Reserve officials about the possibility of prolonged higher interest rates. Domestically, the Sensex and Nifty closed higher for the second consecutive day.

The Sensex opened strong at 73,711.31 and oscillated between a low of 73,459.80 and a high of 74,070.84 during the trading session. It eventually closed up by 253.31 points, or 0.34%, at 73,917.03. Similarly, the Nifty 50 began the day at 22,415.25, fluctuated between a low of 22,345.65 and a high of 22,502.15, and ended with a gain of 62.25 points, or 0.28%, at 22,466.10.

Friday's trading saw a total of 3,939 shares exchanged, with 2,408 shares advancing, 1,407 declining, and 124 remaining unchanged. The broader market indices outperformed the benchmark indices, with the BSE SmallCap index rising by 1.40% and the BSE MidCap index climbing by 1.22%.

Sector-wise, Consumer Durables, Auto, Metal, Realty, and Oil & Gas were the day's biggest gainers, while IT, Pharma, and Healthcare sectors were the most significant laggards.

It's important to note that the markets will be closed on Monday, May 20, due to polling in Mumbai for the ongoing 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
