Bank Nifty monthly and quarterly contracts will now expire on the last Wednesday of the expiry month, starting from March 1, 2024. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) revised the expiry day of Nifty Bank monthly and quarterly contract cycles in December, effective from March 1, 2024.
This revision applies to all Bank Nifty contracts, including weekly, monthly, and quarterly, shifting their expiry to Wednesdays. In July of the previous year, the NSE had already moved the Bank Nifty weekly expiry to Wednesdays from Thursdays.
If Wednesday falls on a trading holiday, the expiry day will be moved to the previous trading day. Existing contracts available for trading on March 1, 2024, will see their expiry day advanced from February 29, 2024, as per NSE’s circular.
Consequently, contracts expiring on March 28, 2024, will now expire on March 27, 2024, and similarly for subsequent months.
The revised schedule for NSE’s F&O contracts expiry will be Monday – Nifty Midcap Select, Tuesday – Nifty Financial Services, Wednesday – Bank Nifty, Thursday – Nifty 50.
Initially, NSE had considered shifting Bank Nifty expiry to Friday from Thursday but later abandoned the plan.
In 2023, NSE maintained its position as the world’s largest derivative exchange by the number of contracts traded and ranked 3rd globally in the equity segment by the number of trades in the electronic order book. By the end of 2023, the number of unique registered investors on the exchange surpassed 8.5 crore.
