On October 2, Reliance Group established a strategic partnership with the Bhutan government to construct solar and hydropower projects, marking the largest foreign direct investment by a private company in the Himalayan country’s renewable energy industry.
The Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group will collaborate with Druk Holding and Investments Ltd, Bhutan’s commercial and investment arm, to develop 500 MW of solar and 770 MW of hydropower projects in the country.
According to a news statement, the 500-MW solar plant in Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City will be built in two 250-MW phases over the next two years. Once completed, the solar project will be the largest of its type in the country, producing clean, renewable energy to help offset the effects of climate change.
In addition to the solar project, Reliance Power Ltd and Druk Holding will collaborate to create the 770-MW Chamkharchhu-1 Hydro Project, which is classed as a run-of-the-river project under a concession model in compliance with Bhutanese government policy, according to the statement.
The Indian group has established a new company, Reliance Enterprises, to engage in Bhutan’s renewable and green energy sector. Reliance Enterprises will be co-promoted by Mumbai-listed Reliance Infrastructure Ltd and Reliance Power Ltd.
